How does it work?
Carbonite runs in the background, making sure new and changed files are backed up every day. But Carbonite never slows down your Internet connection or your PC. Backup operations automatically slow down whenever you’re actively using your computer and speed up again when your computer is idle.

What is backed up?
You’ll have three basic options when you install Carbonite:

  1. Backup My Documents and Desktop (We recommend this option)
  2. Don’t backup anything by default
  3. Backup everything

No matter which option you choose, you can always add or remove files and folders from your backup. When you create a new file inside a folder you’ve selected for backup, that file will automatically get backed up. Changes to the existing files in your backup will automatically get updated.

If you don’t want to back up a file or folder, simply right-click on it and select “Do not backup” from the Carbonite menu. You can exclude all files of a particular type, such as .mpeg files, by right clicking on one .mpeg file and selecting “Don’t back up this type of file.”

What isn’t backed up?
By default, Carbonite doesn’t back up program files (e.g., files with the extension .exe), system files, and other files that have the potential to cause problems when they are restored to a new computer. However, advanced users can override Carbonite’s default policy and add any file they like to their backup, simply by right-clicking on it and selecting “Back this up” from the Carbonite menu.

How long does it take to backup?
Once your initial backup is complete, subsequent backups of new and changed files will take only a few minutes and should be completely unnoticeable.

However, you’ll probably notice that your first backup takes a long time – anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks depending on how much data you have, the upload speed of your Cable or DSL Internet connection, and how much time you spend actively using your computer. We strongly suggest that you leave your computer turned on and connected to the Internet overnight until your first backup is complete.

The biggest constraint on the speed of your backup is the upload speed of your Internet connection. Many people don’t realize that typical home Internet connections are asymmetrical, i.e., you can download files from the Internet a heck of a lot faster (5 to 10 times faster, in fact) than you can upload files. This means that even with your Internet connection running at full blast, you can only upload about 2-3 GB per day to Carbonite.

What about restoring files?
The good news is that you can restore files at the fast download speeds you’re used to! So if you have 10GB to restore to a new computer after a crash, you’ll probably be able to get it all back in less than a day. A backup solution is only useful if restoring your files is just as simple as backing them up (if you’ve ever tried to get a file back from your company’s IT department, you know what we’re talking about.) That’s why Carbonite makes it very easy to restore files, whether you need to restore one file or your entire backup.

The Carbonite Secure Backup drive in your My Computer folder shows you all the files and folders in your backup, organized just as they are on your computer. To restore a file or folder, just right-click on it and select “Restore” – it will be put back in its original location on your hard drive. Or, select “Restore to…” and save the file or folder to a new location.
